Soy Wax vs Paraffin

Posted by Michelle Neathery on

Everyone has their preferred type. I like paraffin because it has a stronger fragrance, but I love the purity of a soy wax (especially with my asthma).

When it comes to candles, there are many types of wax available on the market. Two of the most common types are soy wax and paraffin wax. While both of these waxes are used to create beautiful and aromatic candles, they have several differences that can affect the overall quality of the candle. In this blog post, we will explore the differences between soy wax candles and paraffin candles, and help you make an informed decision about which one is right for you.

What is soy wax?

Soy wax is a natural vegetable wax made from soybean oil. It is a renewable and eco-friendly alternative to paraffin wax, which is made from petroleum oil. Soy wax candles are becoming increasingly popular due to their natural and sustainable properties. They are biodegradable, non-toxic, and emit fewer pollutants than traditional paraffin candles. Soy wax also has a lower melting point than paraffin wax, which means that it burns cooler and slower, allowing for a longer burn time.

What is paraffin wax?

Paraffin wax is a by-product of the petroleum refining process. It has been used for decades in candle-making because of its low cost and availability. While it is easy to work with and produces a bright flame, paraffin wax has several drawbacks. It emits harmful pollutants when burned, including benzene and toluene, which can be hazardous to health. Paraffin candles also have a higher melting point than soy wax candles, which means they burn hotter and faster, resulting in a shorter burn time.

Benefits of Soy Wax Candles

  1. Environmentally Friendly: Soy wax is made from renewable resources and is biodegradable, making it a sustainable and eco-friendly option.

  2. Longer Burn Time: Soy wax burns cooler and slower than paraffin wax, resulting in a longer burn time and less frequent replacements.

  3. Clean Burning: Soy wax candles produce fewer pollutants and soot than paraffin candles, making them a healthier and safer option.

  4. Natural Fragrance: Soy wax can hold fragrance oils better than paraffin wax, resulting in a more natural and pleasant aroma.

  5. Non-Toxic: Soy wax candles are non-toxic and do not contain harmful chemicals that can be hazardous to health.

Benefits of Paraffin Wax Candles

  1. Brighter Flame: Paraffin wax produces a brighter and more intense flame than soy wax, which can be more aesthetically pleasing to some people.

  2. Easy to Work With: Paraffin wax is easy to work with, making it a popular choice for candle makers.

  3. Lower Cost: Paraffin wax is generally less expensive than soy wax, making it a more cost-effective option.

  4. Variety of Colors: Paraffin wax can be easily dyed and colored, allowing for a wider variety of candle designs.

  5. Stronger hot throw

Which one should you choose?

When it comes to choosing between soy wax candles and paraffin candles, it ultimately comes down to personal preference. Soy wax candles are a more sustainable and eco-friendly option, and they produce a longer burn time and a cleaner burning experience. Paraffin candles, on the other hand, are more affordable and offer a brighter flame, a stronger scent throw, and a wider variety of colors.

Regardless of which type of wax you choose, it is important to select high-quality candles that are made with natural and non-toxic ingredients. Be sure to read the labels carefully and choose candles from reputable brands that prioritize sustainability and ethical practices.

In conclusion, while both soy wax candles and paraffin candles have their advantages and disadvantages, soy wax candles are the better choice if you are looking for a more sustainable and natural option that produces a longer burn time and a cleaner burning experience.

We have elected to use mostly soy wax. There are times we may have to use a blend - mainly in pillars and molded candles due to the paraffin being a harder wax. Check out our wax products here:
